In 1991, I began working on my Master’s of Ministry degree from Freed Hardeman University. I was asked to take some leveling classes to help prepare me for entrance into FHU’s Master’s program. Rather than driving 3 hours to FHU’s campus it was suggested to me that I attend a local denominational university to obtain credit in these leveling classes. One of my assignments, while attending this denominational university, was to attend their annual convention. While attending this convention, one of the areas that peaked my curiosity was the nominating process for the presidency of the convention for the next year. The format was that men simply stood up in front of the entire audience and called out the name of the individual they wanted to nominate. Generally they would give some well worded credentials of the person they were nominating and then place his name on the list to be considered. The first man to the microphone began to give out a list of credentials for the name he wanted placed into consideration. The person he was nominating seemed to be very much qualified as a great teacher and a great preacher of the word. He was humble yet strong, he was a people person yet knew when he and others needed some quiet time. He was bold yet very compassionate. Then to my surprise the man at the microphone said: “Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great honor that I place the name of Jesus Christ before this audience for your consideration to be the next president of our convention.” I was shocked, hearing the name of Jesus being placed in nomination for this position but not nearly as shocked as I was when all the names were submitted and the votes were cast. Friends, Jesus didn’t receive one single vote (not even from the man who nominated him). Even though I knew this nomination was symbolic I still thought, Where were the voices of support and where were the votes to back up this nominee? As far as I was concerned, once Jesus’ name was placed into consideration, symbolic or not, I would have voted for Him. It occurred to me that those at that convention were just as silent in their support of Jesus as those who stood at the cross nearly 2,000 years ago. When we should be screaming His name from the mountain tops far too often we are as silent as the tombs. |
